This really concerns me because I got Addy over Christmas and would like to know if they will be retiring her short story dresses soon. I would rather get her birthday and summer dress from her core collection first but I dont want to miss out on the others either. The same for Kirsten and her plaid dress. I dont have her but plan on getting her eventually and I really like that dress. Anyway, thanks!

Personal Shoppers give you a heads-up before things are going to be retired. I would get Addy's Short Story outfits first because they most likely will retire soon.

Sometimes you don't know when things are going to retire, and sometimes you can kind of guess. Personal Shoppers tell you too, like Mel said.

since some of the other short story outfits have already been retired, I'd get any remaining ones that you want first.
Then, I'd also work on any accessories you think you might want. Those are the hardest to reproduce.
There are some wonderful seamstresses on ebay (and our board!) who may be able to replicate a retired dress, but the accessories are tough to do.
Also, sometimes an item might appear at the outlet and that is a sign as well. Sometimes, but not always.

Some of us go to the AG Outlet in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Sometimes when an outfit is found there, that is a sign of retirement. When the stock is very low, they send the leftovers to the Outlet. For example, Bitty's Beautiful Blooms is there now and it is retiring. I also found Samantha's blue Winter Party outfit there for several months before it was retiring. The Outlet usually gets all the retiring AGOT outfits but sometimes they are missing pieces by the time they get to the Outlet.

It is rare that they retire one of the core items. so I have learned to get the things like the short story dresses first. However you can get dinged doing that too. I missed out on Molly's radio that way. I really think they need to have a sign up list where you can find out ahead of time. I tried getting a pesonal shopper once and was refused one because I live out of state and always shop online. I guess I should try again?

I would try again. Maybe you could order something from a personal shopper like the Chicago or NY specific items just to start a relationship and hopefully get on her computer list of customers.
I have found the best way to find out what is retiring is to read this board frequently. Usually, someone on this board will get some information and post it here. We are sort of a "clearing house" for AG information from a variety of sources.

When American Girl retires an outfit you can find it at An American Girl Place as a special like once they had an outfit that had stripes on it that was Addy's it was on sale for $12.00 with any $30.00 purchase, so call a perosnal shopper and ask them what the special is

Was it Addy's Striped dress? That outfit is still available, but only online.

The Store Specials at American Girl Place are not necessarily retiring. They have outfits as Store Specials that are already retired most of the time.
